Social & Emotional Learning
This year at Vanier, our staff has collaboratively decided to focus our professional growth on Social and Emotional learning. As a student or parent, you may wonder what does this mean for our children?
Staff are assessing and implementing tools and strategies that develop each person’s skills in the following areas:
- Self-management & self-awareness
- Social awareness & relationship skills
- Responsible decision-making
These are life-long skills to develop. One of the strategies, we are adapting is the MindUP curriculum from the Hawn Foundation. This program is a well proven method for students to help themselves focus and succeed in the classroom.
MindUP “nurtures optimism and happiness in the classroom, helps eliminate bullying and aggression, increases empathy and compassion, while resolving peer conflicts in schools.” (http://thehawnfoundation.org/mindup/)
At Vanier, we are committed to provide explicit teaching and learning to help each student self-regulate so they are calm, alert and ready to learn!
Our Breakfast Club is open to students from each day from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. We welcome all students to come play games, read and have breakfast. No forms or consent are required to play games–only to receive food services, so we know if there are any food allergies.
Jump Rope for Heart
We enjoyed an active full day of day of skipping this past Thursday at GV! Thanks for helping to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation and healthy living. You are still welcome to bring loonie and toonie donations this week.
