Message from Mr. Murphy
As many of you know by now, our vice principal, Ms. Porpaczy is on a leave to the end of the year. I know our school community will miss her and we wish her a great summer and all the best in her new position for the fall.
Our very own Grade 4 teacher, Ms. Copeland is now our acting vice principal until the end of the school year.
Also, as you likely know, Mr. Dekerf is currently on a leave, so I am filling in while he’s away. At Christmas I retired as the principal of Harold Bishop Elementary in Surrey. In fact my entire teaching and administrative career has been in Surrey. I am thrilled to be a part of the Georges Vanier school community and working with such a great staff while getting to know some of the students and parents here. -Mr. Murphy
“A Big Thank You” – My new role as acting Vice Principal
Our Georges Vanier community dealt with some sudden changes this week, one of which was my new role as Acting Vice Principal. I will be in this position until June 30, 2015. Although this was sudden, I am so grateful for the opportunity and am thoroughly enjoying this new experience. This week I have had the pleasure of visiting many different classes and seeing all the dynamic, innovative, and engaging learning that takes place in our school. One of the best parts of being the Vice Principal is having the chance to get to know many of our fantastic students that I don’t normally get to work with because I am in my own class. I am very happy to be returning to my Grade 4 class next week and look forward to balancing my teaching position with my new role as Vice Principal. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff, students, and parents who have been so kind and caring towards me during this shift, you are a very special group of people and I am proud to be part of this community. – Ms. Copeland
Feel Like Dancing? – Dance Week is here June 2-10
Georges Vanier students are getting their dancing shoes ready for next week’s big “Dance in School” week! We are all very excited to welcome Joanne Fetchko, who has over 20 years of experience in the field of dance. Over the course of the week, Joanne will teach our students a routine that they will practice with their classes. Students will then show off all of their hard work and new moves in the Dance Assembly that will be held on June 10th at 1:40pm in the gym.
On Your Marks, Get Set, Go! – Track Meet June 3rd
On Wednesday, June 3rd, various students from Grade 3-7 will be going to our district track meet at Bear Creek Park. In order to make this event happen for our students, we rely on volunteer drivers. If you are available to drive, please let your child’s classroom teacher know on Monday.
Welcome to Kindergarten – June 4th at 9:00am
Our Kindergarten team has been working tirelessly on getting this wonderful event ready for this Thursday, June 4th. This is a great opportunity for our incoming Kindergarten students to come in, meet the teachers, get acquainted with the school and our staff.
Go, Vanier! Go! – Sports Day, June 12
This is another event that the students and staff all look forward to. Sports Day this year will be held on June 12th rain or shine! Fingers crossed we are lucky to have the sunshine we have been getting lately, but either way we will make this a fun celebration for our students!
Amazing Makers and Digital Designers
Check out these amazing makers and their creations. Using old equipment to spark new ideas. This week many students were also intent on their work designing 3D digital structures. Students co-operate, share ideas and learn from each other. The room is buzzing with, “I figured out how to…” and “Anyone know how to…” and “Look what I made…”. Students do not play games on the iPads: but they have fun creating and learning with meaningful activities. Click here for all of the latest GV LC news!
