Kindergarten registration

Our Free Clothing Exchange is open on Monday after school at 2:30 p.m.  Please drop by the gym storage room #1 or contact the office for more details.  We currently have a nice collection of clothing, footwear and outerwear for K-7 children – and everything is free!   Donations of gently used and clean clothing are always welcome.

Parent Advisory Council – PAC

PAC continues to be in need of additional executive members.  The group meets on the first Friday of each month.  Please contact Mr. Dekerf at the office if you may want to join and volunteer as a PAC member.  Past experience or strong English fluency are not required.

Foundation Skills Assessment  – FSA

Grade 4 & 7 students will soon begin Foundation Skills Assessments at GV.

The Foundation Skills Assessment is an annual province-wide assessment of British Columbia students’ academic skills, and provides a snapshot of how well BC students are learning foundation skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Numeracy.

The main purpose of the assessment is to help the province, school districts, schools and school planning councils evaluate how well students are achieving basic skills, and make plans to improve student achievement. FSA is designed and developed by British Columbia educators. The skills assessed are linked to the provincial curriculum and provincial performance standards.

The assessment is administered annually to Grade 4 and 7 students in public and provincially funded independent schools.

Parking and Student Safety

Please continue to be aware of parking restrictions in front of and around our school.  No Parking zones are clearly marked and monitored by the City of Surrey on a regular basis.  Thanks for parking and driving safely near our school.  Student safety is our highest priority.

Social Emotional Learning

SEL continues to be a significant goal area at Georges Vanier school.

What is social and emotional learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to recognize and manage their emotions, demonstrate caring and concern for others, establish positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenging situations constructively. Although SEL is not a program, many available programs provide instruction in and opportunities to practice, apply, and be recognized for using SEL skills. Competence in the use of SEL skills is promoted in the context of safe and supportive school, family, and community learning environments in which children feel valued and respected and connected to and engaged in learning. SEL is fundamental not only to children’s social and emotional development but also to their health, ethical development, citizenship, motivation to achieve, and academic learning as well.
