On Wednesday mornings Mr. Dekerf often takes grade groups into the gym for FitKids. Grade 6 & 7 students lead active and fun fitness stations for up to three classes at a time. Classroom teachers use this release time to collaborate and learn more together about current teaching and learning issues and techniques. Be sure to ask your children about FitKids!
Spring Concert – “Octopus’ Garden”
Please mark your calendars for April 28th when our music and band classes will perform for family members during 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. concerts. More details and ticket information will be coming your way.
Learning Commons News!
This week many classes read ‘Please Open this Book’ by Adam Lehrhaupt and illustrated by Matthew Forsythe. We loved the characters and the great story sparked lots of discussion. Kindergarten students used the theme of the animals being stuck in the book to help them think about their digital work being stuck in an App. It was a great jumping off point for our lessons on saving our creations to the iPad photo album.
We tweeted our idea and the author wrote back!
We have also been experimenting with stop motion video using items from the Maker Space.
And don’t forget our Monster Book Fair is next week – April 11th – 15th. Classes will have an opportunity to visit the fair during their scheduled Learning Commons period. Student shoppers are welcome to bring their piggy banks at recess and lunch and everyone is welcome to come and check it out after 2:30. Parents and Caregivers are also invited to visit between 8:00 and 8:30 for a quieter browse.
Sports Teams and Events
At this time our badminton teams and Ultimate team are practicing regularly before and after school. Also, the Georges Vanier Hockey League GVHL is playing almost every day at lunch time. Thanks to our many volunteer coaches who offer their extra time to our students!
The Track and Field season is also fast approaching. In order to attend the Surrey District Meet on June 7th, we’ll need 5 parent volunteers to help on this day. Please contact the school office if you would like to volunteer or need more information.
