Moving Forward Together: A Sharing of Indigenous Knowledge and Traditions

Georges Vanier is hosting a First Peoples in Residence program (Feb 5-9th)

This week long event is intended to bring together students and staff with Indigenous people who are living their culture, providing both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students an opportunity to experience Indigenous worldviews and perspectives, and learn about practices specific to a particular First Nation, Inuit or Métis tradition.

We will begin the week with a school-wide assembly Monday morning to welcome the facilitators as guests to the school. Parents are welcome to attend this assembly at 9am on Monday, Feb. 5th. Monday will also include a welcome lunch for staff to meet with the cultural workers. On Monday and the rest of the week, the cultural workers will present to classes on a wide range of topics (traditional storytelling, art, music, dance, history, governance, etc…). The week will conclude Friday morning @10:30 with another school assembly where a few students will share their learning. Parents are welcome to attend this assembly also.

An invitation to participate!! Are you a parent or grandparent of a child at Georges Vanier who is First Nations, Inuit or Metis? If so, we’d like to invite you to share a song, dance, or story at one of the assemblies during the First Peoples in Residence week. We’ll be open for Kindergarten Registration each day from 9:00 – 3:00 p.m. beginning this Monday, January 15th.  Please see our office staff with your required documents.
