Principal / Vice Principal Message

We had a very busy week at Georges Vanier!  Many classes celebrated 100 days of learning, and as indicated on one of the pictures: “We Are 100 Days Smarter!”  Some primary students created individual capes decorated with 100 items including cereal, feathers, stickers, hearts and animals.  There was a parade of students throughout a few of our primary classrooms with special activities to recognize the event.

Helping Teacher Ms. Jen Barker Teaches Numeracy Lessons

Last month, many teachers attended a lunch session on implementing “Counting Collections” in their classrooms.  One of the Surrey School District’s helping teachers, Jen Barker, is now working alongside teachers in the classroom to demonstrate how these lessons can be used in teaching number sense, math operations, fractions and decimals.  Collections of objects, recording sheets, markers and various materials for sorting the collections are used.  Teachers and students are learning multiple applications of this concept and building their capacity for teaching and learning.

One of our Grade 6/7 classes have been working on “Passion Projects”.  They choose a topic, researched and learned about that topic, and then created a way to show their learning.  Working models, dioramas, computer presentations and illustrations are some of the ways the students shared their learning.  Other intermediate classes had a chance to view the projects and talk about them.  Thank you Mr. O’Neil / Mr. Abraham’s class!

Examples of the passion project topics included: Wild Fires; Downs Syndrome and A Way to Feed Homeless Animals.

Buddy Bench

Ms. Buckton, our Aboriginal Youth Care Worker, is working on a project called a “Buddy Bench”.  There are a couple of benches outside in our undercover area that are often used by students, and a “buddy bench” is a place for students to sit if they want others to play with.   She is working with many students to gather their ideas on how they want the bench decorated. This picture is a sample of how many ideas are being submitted.  Thank you to all of the students who are currently working on this project.

Snowshoe Trip To Mt. Seymour

All of our Grade 6/7 students are participating in a snowshoe trip to Mt. Seymour.  Not only do they begin to learn how to snowshoe, but they also participate in outdoor activities such as building a shelter or learning about terrain and mountain conditions.  Our Grade 6 students travelled by bus to Mt. Seymour on a cold, sunny day and had a great time.  Here are some pictures from this trip.

Vanier News Jan. 21 – 25, 2019

It was a very busy week at Georges Vanier.  Two special guests from Urban Safari Rescue Society, Karen and Kelsey, visited many of our primary classes.  They shared a few exotic animals and the students learned many new things about how these animals survive and adapt to their environment.  They also learned that “exotic” means not native to Canada.

During our monthly assembly on Thursday morning, primary teachers recognized students for working hard, improving in a specific area, helping out or including others.  These awards are posted each week on a bulletin board in the main hallway.

The basketball season also started this week, with the boys’ and girls’ teams playing home games.  Both games were very close and the athletes played exceptionally well.  They showed good sportsmanship, fair play and team work.

Plans for Georges Vanier’s  50th Anniversary celebration is also underway.  On Feb. 21 we are planning a school assembly at 10:30 as well as an open house from 3:00 – 4:30.  We hope you are able to join us.

Principal / Vice Principal Message

Our “Dance In Schools” program ended this week with another amazing performance on Friday, Jan. 18.  The second half of the school performed for parents and family members who came to watch.  Students clearly demonstrated their learning and were excited to share with the audience.   It was obvious the students had developed their understanding of the elements of dance, were able to change levels, use space and had mastered their timing with music.  We were all very proud of our them!

A special thank you to our dance instructors: Joanne, Angela and Jodie.  They have returned for a fifth year to help develop a program of dance instruction at Georges Vanier.  Many thanks to all of the parents and family members who came out to watch the performances and support the program with donations.  We appreciate the contributions of both our PAC and the audience!

Pics of the Week

Here are a few samples of some of the art projects created by our students.
