Today was one of those days that really reinforced my love of teaching, learning, and sharing with my students. I was SO impressed by the number of families, 18 of my 29, who were able to participate in our Student-led conferences today. We had moms, dads, older siblings and family friends! I know for many that meant changing their normal routine, switching things around at work or leaving other commitments, but the message was clear and powerful. You care and want to be involved in your child’s learning. Not to say that those families who couldn’t attend don’t care, I know that you do and for you taking time at home to do the conference, thank you too!

Parental involvement is key to a child’s success at school and I am so excited with watching my students share their learning by becoming the “expert” with math examples or through watching the pride light up their faces as they open their Fresh Grade portfolios and watch the videos of their speeches or Hula hoop presentations. Through their Fresh Grade portfolios, our parents and students are able to watch, share and learn from what the students do on a daily basis. To say nothing for the fact that all of our invested parents who help out at home, you get to “see” how it all turned out and watch the speech or the Inquiry Day presentation.

As a working mom myself, I find this “window” into student learning such a wonderful and exciting opportunity to shed light on all that goes on in our class and with our students.

Today’s conference was a wonderful example of how far the students in Division 8 have come from the children they were in September. To the students, well done! You should be proud of your learning, your growth, your sharing, I know I am:)

To the families, thank you so much for being a part of their journey, your support validates all their hard work:)

A Message from Surrey Schools Superintendent Jordan Tinney regarding Phase 1 of Teacher Job Action:

Dear Parents,

As you know, teachers are in a legal position to strike and beginning April 23rd, they will be in phase one of their job action. This first phase will see teachers reducing some activities like supervision and communications with management but these actions should not directly impact your child.

While there likely will be no direct impact on children in phase one, it is important to know that it will not be business as usual in our schools. Your most important point of contact for your school will remain your classroom teacher and principal as they will have the most current information as the strike progresses.

We appreciate your patience and we will continue to provide system-wide communications through our website, www.surreyschools.ca.

PARENTING CORNER: Why Kids Need Their Dads

Four decades of research and hundreds of studies have proven what should be obvious to everyone: The more involved a dad is, the more successful his children will be. A father’s influence can determine a child’s social life, grades at school, and future achievements.

Involved dads = Successful children
The dad effect starts as early as birth. A review of studies by the Father Involvement Research Alliance shows that babies with more involved fathers are more likely to be emotionally secure, confident in new situations, and eager to explore their surroundings. As they grow, they are more sociable. Toddlers with involved fathers are better problem-solvers and have higher IQs by age 3. They are more ready to start school and can deal with the stress of being away from home all day better than children with less involved fathers .

At school, children of involved fathers do better academically. For example, a study by the U.S. Department of Education found that children of highly involved fathers were 43 percent more likely than other children to earn mostly As and 33 percent less likely to repeat a grade. They are also less likely to have behavior problems at school and to experience depression.

According to the Father Involvement Research Alliance review, girls with involved fathers have higher self-esteem, and teenage girls who are close to their dads are less likely to become pregnant. Boys show less aggression, less impulsivity, and more self-direction. As young adults, children of involved fathers are more likely to achieve higher levels of education, find success in their careers, have higher levels of self-acceptance and experience psychological well-being. Adults who had involved fathers are more likely to be tolerant and understanding, have supportive social networks made up of close friends, and have long-term successful marriages. Continue Reading…

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

This year the ‘Natural Disasters Club’ meet over a three month period in the Georges Vanier Learning Commons. Three classes, about 75 students, participated from grades 3 – 5. The goal was to encourage reading using a high interest topic using fiction and non-fiction sources. Students blogged their ideas, created digital art, showed their learning through a variety of apps and web based programs, tweeted their progress and read, read, read. Students designed and created T Shirts to reflect on their learning and each made an iMovie Trailer to bring together the many facets of the project. We are appreciative of the My Class Needs and Fuel Your School programs for the support for this project.

 AUTHENTIC LEARNING: INNOVATION WEEK
This week, over 75 students from Grades 3-7 participated in the first ever INNOVATION WEEK. Students could do any kind of work they wanted, as long as they were focused on their work and prepared to share their learning at the end of the week.

While initially it was challenging for students to realize the level of independence required, they quickly adapted. We started each morning as a group, discussing the shape of the day and watching videos to inspire creative thinking. Here are a couple of videos students enjoyed most:




Projects included: remote control cars, storage containers, decorations, edible creations, and app and website development. At the end of the week, we knew INNOVATION WEEK was successful because of the levels of engagement witnessed:

  • Almost every student said they would participate again.
  • Almost every day, students lost track of time and continued to work through recess and lunch.
  • Students completed work on their own time to meet the Friday deadline.
  • Conversation moved away from talk of final product and more towards process, learning, and demonstrating competencies such as creative and critical thinking, communication, and self-awareness.

Even more impressive what that pockets of personalized learning and innovation were popping up in other places in the school.

Students in Mrs. Rempel and Mr. McDonald’s classes spent time everyday creating their very own Rube-Goldberg machines, while students in Mrs. Henderson and Mr. White’s classes participated in Learn a New Skill week.

We were so happy to provide students with opportunities to not only learn, but have fun doing it. We are thrilled to see our students so engaged in their work.

PARENTING CORNER: Parenting Styles – What they are and why they matter.

Developmental psychologists have long been interested in how parents impact child development. However, finding actual cause-and-effect links between specific actions of parents and later behavior of children is very difficult. Some children raised in dramatically different environments can later grow up to have remarkably similar personalities. Conversely, children who share a home and are raised in the same environment can grow up to have astonishingly different personalities than one another.

Despite these challenges, researchers have uncovered convincing links between parenting styles and the effects these styles have on children. During the early 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrind conducted a study on more than 100 preschool-age children (Baumrind, 1967). Using naturalistic observation, parental interviews and other research methods, she identified four important dimensions of parenting:

  • Disciplinary strategies
  • Warmth and nurturance
  • Communication styles
  • Expectations of maturity and control

Based on these dimensions, Baumrind suggested that the majority of parents display one of three different parenting styles. Further research by also suggested the addition of a fourth parenting style (Maccoby & Martin, 1983). Continue reading this article…

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

The fire has been keeping us nice and toasty in the Learning Commons this week. Strong Start preschool has been enjoying Christmas stories, a Santa craft and exploring skill developing apps on the iPads. Some kindergarten students have used the Balloon Stickie app to create images to show that pirates say “Rrrrr”. Some grade 2 students used Pic Jointer to demonstrate their ideas about categorization with pirate themes and many classes continue to explore new countries through postage stamps.

We are also using a new twitter account in the Learning Commons @VanierLC. Students can use this account to share mini book reviews and recommendations and to tell about their learning. Students only have access during library classes, all tweets are moderated by the Teacher Librarian and we only follow other classes, schools or those we can learn from. Follow us @VanierLC to stay connected.

SPORTS DAY
Sports Day was held yesterday and the poor weather did not dampen our enthusiasm. We were ready with a back-up plan for an indoor event and it was clear that students had a great time. Thank you to our PAC for organizing the much-appreciated hot lunch and concession stand, as well as our great staff who organized the event. KIVA – Authentic Learning
Doing important work isn’t just important for adults, it is for children as well. We often hear about students who struggle with learning or are “bored”. When student do work that is real and that really matters, it changes everything. In past issues, you read about our Grade 7 students doing a 30-Hour Famine and donating the nearly $4000 to charity. That is work that matters! This work recently continued when the several students got together with teachers to visit the Kiva site and select entrepreneurs in under-developed countries they would give micro-loans to. Students read profiles and had discussions. The biggest difference between Kiva and other charities, is that with Kiva, the money loaned is repaid over a certain number of months. This allows our students (and future students) to learn about the real use of money, loans, and percentages, and gives them funds that they can then loan out again. If you have any questions or would like to get involved, come see us at the school and ask us about KIVA!

This week all students at Georges Vanier had the opportunity to choose several free books. These are to take home and keep to read over the summer. Approximately 4000 books were distributed. Please do not bring these books back to the Learning Commons. They were donated by Discovery Books and are greatly appreciated.

Georges Vanier Picture Book of the Year
This year in the Learning Commons, many classes participated in the Book of the Year program. Students judged ten books on story and illustrations, decided which was their favourite and used a ballot to vote. The results have been tabulated and the winner is ‘The Jewel Fish of Karnak’ by Graeme Base. An entertaining story set in Ancient Egypt with beautiful illustrations and a hidden treasure.

SCHOOL FEES – 2013-14

Each school year, parents support their child(ren)’s formal learning experiences in a wide variety of ways.  We so appreciate all that you do to ensure a successful year!

In addition to providing the school supplies itemized on a grade list, parents are periodically asked for monies to cover specific items and/or special events.  No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in any school activity due to the inability to pay.  Please contact the Principal should you require any financial assistance.

As we plan for the 2013/2014 school year, we anticipate the following costs:

Student Planner:  We encourage all students in Grades 1-7 to purchase a School Planner at a cost of $5.00.  Included in the planner is our school code of conduct, school calendar and school district information. We find this to be an excellent tool for facilitating home/school communication, as well as for developing our students’ organizational skills.  However, using our school planner is optional as a parent may purchase their own version.

Field Studies and Field Trips:  Classes often enjoy educational visits to community facilities which extend and enhance the curriculum.  While we use school monies or fundraise to cover the costs of such activities wherever possible, there are times when parents are asked to contribute towards the cost of the trip.  If you choose to have your child not participate in a field study, a suitable program will be provided at the school.

Musical Instruments:  Grade 4 students learn to play the recorder.  Students will have the option of purchasing one through our music teacher for $8.00 or receiving one on loan from the school.   Also, our Grade 7 students who opt for band either purchase or rent an instrument.  Costs vary depending on the instrument.

School Supplies:  Parents have the option of purchasing their child’s school supplies on their own utilizing the grade supply list or for your convenience you may wish to purchase supplies as a package through Edu-Pac.  Payment is made directly to Edu-Pac. Costs for supplies vary based on grade. Please see the office for lists and order forms. Bulk orders are done for Kindergarten supplies. The anticipated cost per student is $26.00. Parents have the option of contributing their own supplies to the class. Please see the office for a supply list.
