IN THIS ISSUE:

TEACHER JOB ACTION UPDATE
This week saw a closure of Surrey Schools on Thursday, May 29 due to rotating strikes as a result of Teacher Job Action.

The next school closure is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2014. All schools in Surrey will be closed and behind picket lines.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel most field trips as a result of Job Action, including our participation in the District Track Meet at Bear Creek Park.

We have had questions regarding Sports Day on June 13 and the Grade 7 Celebration on June 20. We plan to move ahead with these events and hope that if needed, you as parents will be willing and able to assist us. Stay tuned. As the dates of rotating strikes become available, we will be able to determine if dates need to be adjust.

A letter from Surrey Schools Superintendent, Jordan Tinney, will be coming home with students on Monday to further outlines school closures. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during this difficult time.

VANIER STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Friday was a special day at Georges Vanier because our students made a difference to others in the world.

At our Friday assembly, Lyric Symington, a grade 5 student, had all his hair cut off so it could be donated to cancer survivors. Lyric shared that he had seen a story of someone making a similar sacrifice 3 years ago and decided to do the same. So for the past 3 years, Lyric has continued to grow out his hair. The hair will be donated so that wigs can be made for cancer survivors who have lost their hair because of treatment. We are so proud of you, Lyric!

Also on Friday, students in Mrs. Lutz’s class gave $365 in KIVA loans. KIVA is a micro-lending organization that provides loans to entrepreneurs in third world countries. Students learn about global issues, loan terms, and use competencies such as critical thinking and problem solving. Most importantly, students understand the value of helping others. SCHOOL FEES FOR 2014-15
Each school year, parents support their child(ren)’s formal learning experiences in a wide variety of ways.  We so appreciate all that you do to ensure a successful year!

In addition to providing the school supplies itemized on a grade list, parents are periodically asked for monies to cover specific items and/or special events.  No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in any school activity due to the inability to pay.  Please contact the Principal should you require any financial assistance.

As we plan for the 2014/15 school year, we anticipate the following costs:

Student Planner:  We encourage all students in Grades 1-7 to purchase a School Planner at a cost of $5.00.  Included in the planner is our school code of conduct, school calendar and school district information. We find this to be an excellent tool for facilitating home/school communication, as well as for developing our students’ organizational skills.  However, using our school planner is optional as a parent may purchase their own version.

Field Studies and Field Trips:  Classes often enjoy educational visits to community facilities which extend and enhance the curriculum.  While we use school monies or fundraise to cover the costs of such activities wherever possible, there are times when parents are asked to contribute towards the cost of the trip.  If you choose to have your child not participate in a field study, a suitable program will be provided at the school.

Musical Instruments:  Grade 4 students learn to play the recorder.  Students will have the option of purchasing one through our music teacher for $8.00 or receiving one on loan from the school.   Also, our Grade 7 students who opt for band either purchase or rent an instrument.  Costs vary depending on the instrument.

School Supplies:  Parents have the option of purchasing their child’s school supplies on their own utilizing the grade supply list or for your convenience you may wish to purchase supplies as a package through Edu-Pac.  Payment is made directly to Edu-Pac. Costs for supplies vary based on grade. The deadline to order supplies through Edu-Pac was May 28, 2014. Bulk orders are done for Kindergarten supplies. The anticipated cost per student is $25.00. WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN – JUNE 9, 2014
Our annual Welcome to Kindergarten event takes place on June 9, 2014, beginning at 8:45 a.m. in our gym. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome you and your children to a new school and the kindergarten experience. You will have the opportunity to meet the adults who will be working with your child, and your child will get to meet future classmates as well as participate in a rotation of activities. You’ll even get a take-home bag full of resources and materials!

Today was one of those days that really reinforced my love of teaching, learning, and sharing with my students. I was SO impressed by the number of families, 18 of my 29, who were able to participate in our Student-led conferences today. We had moms, dads, older siblings and family friends! I know for many that meant changing their normal routine, switching things around at work or leaving other commitments, but the message was clear and powerful. You care and want to be involved in your child’s learning. Not to say that those families who couldn’t attend don’t care, I know that you do and for you taking time at home to do the conference, thank you too!

Parental involvement is key to a child’s success at school and I am so excited with watching my students share their learning by becoming the “expert” with math examples or through watching the pride light up their faces as they open their Fresh Grade portfolios and watch the videos of their speeches or Hula hoop presentations. Through their Fresh Grade portfolios, our parents and students are able to watch, share and learn from what the students do on a daily basis. To say nothing for the fact that all of our invested parents who help out at home, you get to “see” how it all turned out and watch the speech or the Inquiry Day presentation.

As a working mom myself, I find this “window” into student learning such a wonderful and exciting opportunity to shed light on all that goes on in our class and with our students.

Today’s conference was a wonderful example of how far the students in Division 8 have come from the children they were in September. To the students, well done! You should be proud of your learning, your growth, your sharing, I know I am:)

To the families, thank you so much for being a part of their journey, your support validates all their hard work:)

As you know, teachers are in a legal position to strike and beginning April 23rd, they will be in phase one of their job action. This first phase will see teachers reducing some activities like supervision and communications with management but these actions should not directly impact your child.

While there likely will be no direct impact on children in phase one, it is important to know that it will not be business as usual in our schools. Your most important point of contact for your school will remain your classroom teacher and principal as they will have the most current information as the strike progresses.

We appreciate your patience and we will continue to provide system-wide communications through our website, www.surreyschools.ca.

Four decades of research and hundreds of studies have proven what should be obvious to everyone: The more involved a dad is, the more successful his children will be. A father’s influence can determine a child’s social life, grades at school, and future achievements.

Involved dads = Successful children
The dad effect starts as early as birth. A review of studies by the Father Involvement Research Alliance shows that babies with more involved fathers are more likely to be emotionally secure, confident in new situations, and eager to explore their surroundings. As they grow, they are more sociable. Toddlers with involved fathers are better problem-solvers and have higher IQs by age 3. They are more ready to start school and can deal with the stress of being away from home all day better than children with less involved fathers .

At school, children of involved fathers do better academically. For example, a study by the U.S. Department of Education found that children of highly involved fathers were 43 percent more likely than other children to earn mostly As and 33 percent less likely to repeat a grade. They are also less likely to have behavior problems at school and to experience depression.

According to the Father Involvement Research Alliance review, girls with involved fathers have higher self-esteem, and teenage girls who are close to their dads are less likely to become pregnant. Boys show less aggression, less impulsivity, and more self-direction. As young adults, children of involved fathers are more likely to achieve higher levels of education, find success in their careers, have higher levels of self-acceptance and experience psychological well-being. Adults who had involved fathers are more likely to be tolerant and understanding, have supportive social networks made up of close friends, and have long-term successful marriages. Continue Reading…

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

This year the ‘Natural Disasters Club’ meet over a three month period in the Georges Vanier Learning Commons. Three classes, about 75 students, participated from grades 3 – 5. The goal was to encourage reading using a high interest topic using fiction and non-fiction sources. Students blogged their ideas, created digital art, showed their learning through a variety of apps and web based programs, tweeted their progress and read, read, read. Students designed and created T Shirts to reflect on their learning and each made an iMovie Trailer to bring together the many facets of the project. We are appreciative of the My Class Needs and Fuel Your School programs for the support for this project.

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
Parents, don’t forget that this coming Wednesday, May 14th is an EARLY DISMISSAL at 1:27 p.m. The purpose of this early dismissal is for you to attend Student-Led Conferences. Your child will prepare work for you to see. This allows you to understand the learning progress they are making, as well as how you can further support your child’s learning at home if there are challenges.

So what role do you, as a parent, play in Student-Led Conferences?

Be supportive! Encourage your child to talk about what they have learned. If you know your child is struggling with something, ensure them that hard work WILL pay off and that together with the classroom teacher, you will be there to support them with their learning.

Be specific! Avoid comments like, “Good job”, “Nice work”, or “You’re so smart”. Use comments like, “I am really impressed by how you…”, “You worked really hard to…”, or “Tell me about…”

Let your child lead the way! Encourage your child to take a lead during the conference. Whatever your child shares with you, ask them good questions and encourage them to explain to you why they are sharing that particular piece of learning evidence.

Student-Led Conferences will run from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. and you do not need to make an appointment. Remember, your involvement in your child’s education is crucial to their success.

PARENTING CORNER: How to Give Unconditional Love When You Didn’t Get It Yourself

All parents know that children need unconditional love to thrive. But how can we give our children something many of us haven’t really experienced?

The answer is that each of us CAN experience unconditional love — by giving it to ourselves. We do this by actively, thoughtfully, accepting our selves — imperfections and all. When we miss the mark of our own standards — as we all do, all the time — we give ourselves a compassionate hug, and resolve to give ourselves better support so we can keep moving in the right direction.

Compassion — whether it comes from inside or outside — gradually moves humans from a state of being “self-centered” to a state of being “centered in self.” Researchers say this deep self-love is the opposite of selfishness.

We become so secure in our ok-ness that we’re more emotionally generous. Anger and defensiveness begin to melt away. That lens of love softens our judgment of ourselves, which in turn makes us more loving. We’re happier people — and more peaceful parents.

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

This week in the Learning Commons we have been getting ready for Pirate Day which will be held on Thursday May 15th. Students are invited to wear a shirt with stripes, a belt, a scarf and a ‘scurvy dog’ scowl. We will be meeting our buddy classes in the gym and reading together, watching a short video and singing a pirate song or two. All primary students have made a Pirate hat to wear at the assembly.


‘Let’s Stuff the Learning Commons’ has been a great success. Next week we will take a few photos, blog our pictures and send the toys home at the end of the week on Friday.

Many students in Grade 2 have created animal research eBooks using My Story App in the Learning Commons. Check out this sample of their great work “A Moose”

Division 8 began work on making art using the work of Monet as inspiration. Students are using the ProCreate App to blend colours and creating their own ‘impressionist’ art. Next week students will be adding poems to go with their artwork and blogging their creations.

30-HOUR FAMINE
Our 4th Annual Grade 7 30-Hour Famine took place on April 3 and 4. The event was a fabulous success and helped our senior students make a positive difference in the world. Over the past three years, our students have raised $1700, $2500, and $3900 – an incredible accomplishment!

The pledge total stood at $3100 on Friday afternoon, but we will update the total when all money is collected.

This year, we are happy and proud to support the following organizations:
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – 40%
B.C. Children’s Hospital – 40%
KIVA – 20%

We concluded our Famine by watching and discussing several videos. The video that seemed to resonate most was that of a little girl saved by the hard work of those at B.C. Children’s Hospital:
Thank you for making our 30-Hour Famine event a great success!

COMMUNICATING STUDENT LEARNING
We are excited to announce that very soon, both students and parents will have access to FreshGrade portfolios. You will recall from earlier editions of the VanierNews, teachers have been using an online product called FreshGrade to both collect and assess learning evidence. The true power of this tool is its ability to not only collect evidence, but to share it with students and parents. Shortly, students and parents will be able to view portfolio items and comment on these items. Student learning benefits most not by evaluating with percents or grades, but rather when students receive DESCRIPTIVE FEEDBACK they can apply to their own learning. Student learning is also enhanced when students themselves are given the opportunity to assess their own learning.

We believe the the consistent use of these new FreshGrade features will improve student learning, independence, and self-awareness.

Ms. Dhaliwal’s class created Earth Day messages in the style of Todd Parr. We used more than one app (PicCollage and ProCreate) to create our work. This is called App Smashing. 30-HOUR FAMINE
Our Grade 7 30-Hour Famine is quickly approaching on April 3 and 4. This is a fun and educational experience that helps our senior students make a positive difference in the world. Our students have raised $1700, $2500, and $3900 in each of the past three years – an incredible accomplishment! Money has been donated to such organizations as Make-A-Wish, Children’s Hospital, KIVA, BCSPCA, Red Cross, and Canadian Cancer Society. This year, we hope to meet or beat our previous totals.

WE CAN ONLY DO THIS WITH YOUR HELP!!!

Sponsor a grade 7 student directly, or support the whole group by making a donation at the office. All donations of $20 or more are tax-deductible.

This year, students have chosen the following charities to support:

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – 40%
B.C. Children’s Hospital – 40%
KIVA – 20%

AUTHENTIC LEARNING: High Tech – High Touch

On Tuesday March 4th 2014, grade 1 and 2 students hosted a scientist from High Tech High Touch. We were busy exploring bugs and the Earth. The grade 2s got to make clouds, mudslides, and handle real earthworms. The grade 1s saw a tarantula skin, cockroach, crickets, and made spiderwebs. It was a hands on learning opportunity for all those that were able to attend.

PARENTING CORNER: 5 Things Teachers Wish Parents Knew: Your Children Can Do More Than You Think

This week, I’m turning the tables and giving some space to the “teacher” half of the “Parent-Teacher Conference.” When I ask teachers, “What one thing would you want your students’ parents to know?” the same five points come up over and over again.

1. Your kids can do much more than you think they can do. Despite all evidence to the contrary, your children do not need your help tying shoes, zipping jackets, sharpening pencils, packing their backpacks and lunch, or any of the million other tasks they expect you to do for them every day.

Take some direction from kindergarten teachers. If you think it takes an eternity to get your children out the door, imagine getting 20 children out the door, six times a day. Elementary school teachers are masters of delegation, so the child proficient at shoelaces becomes their “tying expert,” and the boy with a skill for zippers becomes the designated “zipper helper,” and before you can say “self-sufficient,” every child in the class has learned to tie and zip and mitten themselves. ABORIGINAL FRIENDSHIP CENTRE
Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association (FRAFCA) offers specialized programs for Aboriginal people in Surrey and its surrounding areas. FRAFCA provides daily groups to support children, youth, adults and elders. FRAFCA services include family drop in, outreach, pre-natal classes, parenting classes and youth night. There is also an employment program called Aboriginal BEST (Business Entrepreneurship Skills Training). The program teaches valuable business skills and an opportunity to meet other aspiring workers.

STUDENT SAFETY: IMPORTANT UPDATES

Student Drop-off and Pick-up
We appreciate that the majority of parents follow driving and parking rules around our school. It’s the best way to ensure our children stay safe. Here are a few suggestions how you can help:

  • Model safety…use the crosswalk.
  • WATCH FOR CHILDREN!
  • Park in designated areas only. Many parents are parking along 70 Avenue in areas marked as NO PARKING zones. Children are running across the street and there have been a few near misses.
  • Please do not pick up or drop off in the staff parking lot. Parking lots are not safe for students.
  • Take your time, park further away, and walk the short distance to the school.

Nut Alerts
There are significantly more students at Georges Vanier how have severe allergies to nuts and nut products. Some allergies are so severe, children can die even if exposed to the oils from a nut. We ask what you would want for your own children, a school free of anything that can harm children. We kindly ask that you refrain from sending any food to school that contains (or may contain) nuts or nut products. This includes peanut butter. Thank you!

Adults In The School
We have worked SO HARD to make our school a place where everyone feels welcome. We want that to continue, but we also recognize that student and adult safety may be compromised with so many adults in and out of the building. With our Daycare and StrongStart program, there are many adults in our school and it’s difficult for students and staff to know if every adult they see should be in the school. In recent times, several unknown adults have been in the school and have stolen items. Therefore, we would like to ask for your help:

  • Please drop off all lunches at the table near the office. We are happy to have you wait and personally hand lunch to your child. Make sure they know to come visit you at the office when they come in from playing outside.
  • Ensure all exterior doors are locked after you use them.
  • StrongStart parents are asked to enter through the exterior StrongStart door.
  • Little Harvard parents are asked to enter through the exterior doors closest to the preschool, rather than through the front doors.
  • StrongStart and Little Harvard parents will shortly be given a bright visitor badge. All parents will be expected to display this badge when entering the school.
  • Parents who are visiting for longer periods of time, please sign in at the office and use a visitors badge.

Thank you in advance for your continued support in making Georges Vanier as safe as possible!

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS

Students in the Georges Vanier Learning Commons are very proud of their many accomplishments. Take a look at some of the great things students are able to do.

We also created ten second book reviews using the Pic and Vid Stitch App. This was tricky as students had to figure out how share their ideas in 10 seconds and to ‘stitch’ the picture to their first time ‘selfie’ video. Great job!

The Natural Disasters have been tweeting about their latest creations. Students are using plasticine to show their learning about tsunamis. We have been exploring the power and devastation of the tsunamis and students are designing art that reflects those emotions. Follow them on Twitter #VanierLC

COMMUNICATING STUDENT LEARNING: Continuing The Conversation
In recent weeks, many parents will have received a request to have them share their email address with their child’s classroom teacher. You can view this document here: FreshGrade Invite. The purpose of this request is so teachers can begin to send you evidence of learning, feedback regarding your child’s progress as well as areas requiring further improvement, and suggestions of how you can support your child. Receiving this information in a timely manner throughout the term is much more effective than waiting until the end of the reporting period in March.

Our staff members are all at different stages in terms of this roll-out of student learning information. Some may be sharing already, others may soon begin, while yet others may still be at the collection phase. We appreciate your patience as our staff continues to learn and grow along side your children!

Your feedback and the feedback of our learners is VERY important and we need to hear it. Please speak with your child’s teacher directly, or Mr. Vendramin and Mrs. Porpaczy.

LEARNING COMMONS NEWS


Watch these kindergarten students morph into the avatars they created using I Made Face and FaceFilm Apps.

Students used this great geometric design app to create art. They exported their work into photos and then uploaded to Dropbox. Great job!

Mrs. Rempel’s class used Pic Collage and ProCreate App to present their poetry. Students in Division 5 used DoodleBuddy and Comic Book App to create anti-bullying posters. Grade 2 and 3 used PicCollage to show their learning about QR codes. They posted their work to their student blogs.
